December Dust

Buttons or something more

In 1969 many people were born. One person was Tara Donovan. Tara is now a great artist. She uses everyday objects such as drinking straws, Styrofoam cups, and scotch tape. Tara doesn’t think of making a specific shape to make. First she chooses a material and then she just starts making something. Eventually it forms into another piece of art. Tara has over 15 pieces of art all made out of different household objects! She has used tampered glass, toothpicks, metal pins, paper plates and many more objects.
One object she used is shirt buttons. One of her greatest pieces to me is “bluffs”. Tara made this to look like underwater seaweed or coral. Perhaps Tara made this sculpture because she has an interest in the sea and underwater. Or she has an interest in the ocean and the life that doesn’t move - the plants. Tara could have even meant it to be something different.
When I saw “bluffs” I thought of stalagmites. I thought of caves and dripping water from the brothers of the stalagmites, the stalactites. Then I also thought of crystals and how the two look the same in so many ways. They both almost glow from the inside for one. Then I saw even a third thing. I saw underwater coral or seaweed. This is what Tara was trying to make originally but it can be taken in so many variation.
