Greed Caused from A Pearl

Can a Pearl Cause Evil or Is It the Heart of People?

Have you ever found something of great value? Kino found a wonder of nature in the story The Pearl by John Steinbeck. What Kino found was a very large pearl. He thought that the money from it would support his family and send his son to school. Instead, the pearl caused harm to his family and brings evil out from many.
The doctor’s evil side surfaces when he hears about the pearl. Before the pearl is found, their baby is stung by a scorpion. The scorpion is a sign of evil because it makes Kino want to find a pearl even more. When they go to the doctor’s house, his servant says the doctors busy just because they have no money. But then the doctor hears about the pearl and he comes to their house just to get some money. That sounds pretty evil.
The island community reeks of evil when the pearl is discovered. One person comes into the house to look for the pearl. Two people attack Kino and he almost loses it. Everyone wants some of the money and many people try to steal it. Because of the pearl so much evil is created in the town. This whole struggle is an example of man vs. man and their greedy souls.
Have you ever seen poverty? In The Pearl the natives have very much poverty. The colonialists aren’t even helping. They buy the pearls for too cheap and the natives don’t know it. The natives are hired to dive for pearls and they still don’t get paid very much.
When you think of a church do you think of nice people or do you think of greedy people? Well in The Pearl the priest never went to any of the brush houses. Then Kino finds the pearl and the priest comes to Kino’s house. He says “I hope thou wilt remember to give thanks, my son, to Him who has given thee this treasure, and to pray for guidance in the future. In other words he’s asking him to donate to the church, which isn’t bad but he never asked before.
Kino who everyone likes, and who is very rich, turns evil. One night Juana tries to throw the pearl back into the sea because she can see the evil in it. Kino hears her and hits her and then kicks her and takes the pearl back. On his way back to the house someone jumps him and starts beating him up. So as you can see the pearl is the main sing of evil. Then Kino kills the man. Even after he beats up Juana she still finds the pearl and gives it back to him. After that they run away and are followed so Kino kills those three men also. So as you can see the pearl is a huge sign of evil.
Just because the pearl ruined Kino and his family, doesn’t mean if you find something valuable it’s going to ruin you and your family. So much harm and evil to come from a little pearl is not good. So don’t get greedy if you win the lottery or something like that. I think if I found something valuable I would split it with my family and not get greedy.
